What the heck is Labradorite?Monday, April 01, 2013
Our designs made with semi-precious labradorite gemstones have been a huge customer fave for Spring 13. Displaying a scintillating array of colors, it works well with other gemstones and a rainbow of colors. People ask me all the time...but what the heck is it??
Here's a quick 411 on our best seller.
Labradorite is the generic name for a variety of feldspar.
Labradorite is named for Labrador, Canada where it was first discovered. It's primarily found on Paul's Island in Labrador, Canada. It may also be found in Norway, Finland, India, Madagascar and elsewhere throughout the world. It is also found in Madagascar, India, Newfoundland, Finland, and Russia.
It's distinctive flash of irridescent colors is known as "labradorescence." These beautiful flashes of color change according to the angle of light refraction, and may be blue, green, yellow, and pink, with the majority of the stone itself a dark grey in color. The stronger the labradorescence, the more desirable and higher quality the Labradorite is for jewelry purposes.
...and it's one of my favorite stones!
